For English scroll down.

Let your children know the reason why “they are not allowed” to do certain things

There’s a saying that says we spend the first two years of our children’s life teaching them how to speak and walk, and the following two years telling them to be quiet and stay put. This is actually the way in which we are trying to educate our children, to teach them to be nice and try to keep them away from any danger. We believe that if we ban our children from doing certain things they’ll understand and they’ll conform to our requests, but, unfortunately, this theory is wrong and practice shows us on a daily basis that the more you deny a child the right to do something, the badly he/she will want to do it.

It is extremely important to protect our children, to provide them with a safe environment in which they can develop, but this does not mean that we have to raise them in a crystal ball away from any danger or ban them from doing certain things. The healthiest approach in this regard is to give them the freedom they need in order to be able to discover things that allow them to develop and to explain to them in a precise way why some things are allowed and others aren’t.

Parents have to carefully explain the rules to their children, because even if some of them are obvious and easy to understand, there are others which need more detailed explanations. It’s one thing to tell your children hat they are not allowed to stick their fingers into the socket and something completely different to explain to them why it is so important to go to bed early.

Therefore, the moment we are able to set some ground rules and explain to our kids why they have to comply with them, they become more capable of learning how to behave, to fend off any threat, to respect others, to build high self-esteem, to become more responsible and to develop their skills in terms of resilience to frustration.
