For English scroll down.

If you suffered when being punished, why would you do the same thing your child as well?

In the last 200 years our world has undergone a dramatic transformation and huge efforts have been made so that individuals can enjoy greater freedoms and more rights. Even if such changes have been made and modern society is now organized according to fundamental principles of human rights and freedoms, there are still parents who continue to use teaching methods of the Middle Ages in order to educate their children.

Us too, nowadays’ parents, grew up in an era in which domination was the main teaching method and the main tools used were fear and guilt. In order to motivate us to be obedient, we were made to believe that we were bad and that we didn’t have the right to a proper treatment unless we were quiet. And the fear of losing our parents’ love and our privileges were powerful enough to make us comply with the rules at that time. When this approach was no longer working, we faced serious punishments, often being cruelly beaten, which became an even greater fear.

Once the world as we knew it has changed, this has also had a consequence on children, which are nowadays completely different than we would have imagined. The only reference points we can relate to are ourselves and our childhood friends. But it is extremely important to break with the past and return to modern day society so that we can become aware of the fact that today’s children are no longer responsive to an education based on the feeling of fear. In fact, the old method of fear weakens parental control. Threatening children with punishment is actually turning them against their parents and makes them disobedient. Intimidating children through yelling and hitting no longer brings parents control, but actually annihilates the child’s will to listen and cooperate.

If we still remember how it felt like being punished, and if we are honest to ourselves, we must acknowledge that a punishment injures one’s soul, and is directly related to high intensity resilience, resentment, rejection and disgust. All this factors enabled us to reject the values that our parents were trying to instil in us and to rebel against them and their control. We were longing to get rid of or parents’ control at a time when we needed it most in order to develop ourselves in a healthy way.

We often find ourselves saying that “perhaps my parents exaggerated a bit but I’m still here, I’m not dead, on the contrary, look how high I got“. But this is actually a statement for others, it’s an attitude meant to remove our parents from the category of” bad people who used to hit and punish their children“. Sure, this may be one approach, but unfortunately the subject of this topic does not refer to the “child I used to be”. If, instead of using big words and expressions such as “I am preparing my child for the future“, “I want to turn him into a good man“, we would consider the relationship established between us and our children, we would manage to understand their real needs and feelings.

It is said that babies are born in a small body so that us, as parents, can turn them into big (adult) individuals. It’s the best way to describe the relationship of power versus powerlessness that exists between children and their parents. It is our duty to use this power we have in order to provide our children with a safe environment in which they can grow and develop. We have no right to misuse the power we have been given or to even use it against the small and defenceless ones.

The truth is that we cannot change their faith and we can’t keep them away from certain problems but we can instead offer them our support as parents, which is extremely necessary in order for them to be able to cope with any difficulties and achieve great things in life.
